I don’t think there are many “100% right” answers in education to tough questions. I do think, though, that you should be willing to communicate the values/reasoning behind choices you make AND to be open to feedback, especially from those impacted by those choices.

Paris now has 180 gorgeous ‘school streets.’ They are pedestrianized and landscaped streets around schools - to mitigate crashes, prioritize walking to school, reduce noise and air pollution. No brainer, really.

THEY STILL HAVEN’T SEARCHED THE LANDFILL. Wait, so idiot billionaires can do stupid things like search for a wreckage and the whole world is watching but Indigenous women in Winnipeg get murdered and the police won’t even search a landfill for their bodies

What happens when you give 50 homeless people $7,500 each? They spend it on rent, clothing and food (not alcohol, drugs and smokes), a stereotype-shattering B.C. study shows, by Brieanna Charlebois theglobeandmail.com/canada/british

“Education is, first, the challenge of connecting students to the project of schooling, investing them in its goals and processes while recognizing that many students have found those goals alienating and the processes dehumanizing.” Dan Meyer open.substack.com/pub/danmeyer/p

For anyone teaching the MTH1W course, here are the recently released EQAO Grade 9 Math questions as a Desmos activity. It can be used as a review... maybe a few questions at a time and then look at the students' answers? teacher.desmos.com/activitybuilde

Dividing with fractions? So many ways to make sense of the problem! With a nice picture (thanks Mathigon), the connections between pictorial and symbolic representations are so clear! #iteachmath #mtbos #hrcemath

As many are learning of the horrific news out of Owasso, OK, many news outlets, and therefore, many of you, are using their dead name. Their name is Nex Benedict. They were a 4.0 student. They liked cats. They were Cherokee. They deserved to live. May they find peace now.

Take 10 red cards and 10 black cards. Shuffle them and make a pile of 6 and a pile of 14 cards. Count the red cards in the small pile & the black cards in the big pile. Repeat several times. What do you notice about the two counts each time? Why so?

I know I tweet about history a lot, but for Black History Month, let's talk about math (OK, there'll be a little bit of history involved) A thread:

What if schools valued the exploration of questions more than attaining answers? What if systems were designed for curious entry points rather than standardized outcomes? What if education centred around relevance and wonder, rather than percentages and grades? As a classroom

Ted Sizer urged us to shadow a high school student for a full day or 2 to understand what it's really like to attend a traditional H.S. - & thus how urgent it is to rethink this model of schooling. One teacher did so & emerged shaken. An eye-opening read: ow.ly/E5bum

Mission accomplished! Earlier this school year, I was inspired by another post to curate and organize 180 math tasks on Google Slides. I just finished task #180. Recent additions come from Math is Fun, Alicia Burdess and Traci Jackson. #iteachmath bit.ly/180daysmath 1/n
