@whittlestatue

I produce film documentaries with a specialism in biography. Hence I've made films about Wilbert Awdry and Sir Frank Whittle for BBC 2, and Eric “Winkle” Brown.

Calling all Sappers. An opportunity has arisen for lovers of classical music & bridging to join us at a seaside location. Months of bridge building with like-minded souls, whilst listening to Germanic opera. Generous terms. Tattoos & ruthlessness prefered. Apply: Wagner Group

75 missiles were fired, 10 people were killed. It is horrible that one person should be killed, but the firework display nonetheless appears to have been an expensive flop. #UkraineRussianWar

Russia is clearly still as out-of-date today as it was for the time when I filmed there in 1987. Yet Putin clearly does not realise

My Dad and his cousins often mentioned a low-flying German Ju88 machine-gunning local streets and the playground and class rooms at Copleston High School and Sixth Form in Ipswich while the girls were playing netball, in February 1941. The incident is mentioned in my Grandfather’s diary:

76017 being towed through Selhurst earlier today, en route from the Watercress Line to the Bluebell Railway for their Giants of Steam gala. This is also the first time (that I know of) that this engine has been on the mainline since the 1960s.

Ding Dong. I am so sad to learn that one of my childhood heroes, the actor Leslie Phillips CBE, he of Carry on Nurse & Carrry on Constable and Harry Potter, has died. An officer in the DLI during the war, he was a scarcely credible 98.

Just wanted to give huge thumbs up 👍to all the Thomas fans who managed to get to the Midland Arts Centre yesterday, without the fans these shows wouldn’t happen. So well done and look forward to seeing you at the next one

On this day 28 years ago I woke up to sad news. Wilbert had died overnight. I quickly asked the BBC to repeat the film he helped me make. The Thomas the Tank Engine Man trailer (Bookmark BBC 2, 1995). youtu.be/cUctlO5dSE8?fe… via YouTube

As it’s the 80th birthday of The Railway Series, here’s a feature I wrote for the Daily Mail to mark the 65th. It still reads well - but I wish the paper hadn’t such an inaccurate headline! Daniel Coffey dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1…
