A couple of yesterday's close-ups were easy, Shivering Sands Fort 1943, Samian (Roman) lamp 100-150AD. The engine house chimney on Whitstable Harbour (painted 1924) and the flywheel of the Robert Stephenson winding engine 1829 were more difficult. More tomorrow.

A view of Canterbury from St Stephen's Hill. A compact city but with windmills, huge barracks and a cubic water mill. Outside the town all is rural, except that the Industrial Revolution has intervened. Date please? Who was Adelaide? Second class travel is rather basic!

Before photography we had to rely on the artist's sketch. This one by T M Baynes of 1830 struggles with super-tall trees and Invicta's wheels but is otherwise rather good. Can you answer the simple questions? (Expand the image first). Crab and Winkle Line
