I had no problem talking to student protestors

political reporters often silence colleagues by claiming others lack of perceived neutrality makes their jobs harder. Does Peter Baker attacking protesters, on issues he doesn’t cover, makes his colleagues jobs easier or harder? Will he get a “your tweet” email?

People who distrust the media often have a reason to. I never have the hubris to think anyone who is not an elected or public official is supposed to talk to me. And if you approach your job this way, it’s unsurprising when people refuse you.

I would like student encampments to let their fellow student journalists report freely on them. Though a decade of reporting on protests taught me that subjects tend to be a little paranoid in these environments because there really are people out there who are out to get them.
