Next week is favoured to bring more settled (dry) conditions in the UK & Ireland. Chilly nights possible depending on how the high shapes up. A risk of a low affecting the south for a time - a scenario that the ECMWF model is a lot more interested in than the GFS & GEM models.

Wet Saturday ahead. Still some variability in the guidance with how far south highest accumulations sit, but the general consensus is for a washout across northern England and N/W Wales.

After today's washout, high pressure makes a return. Don't think the remnants of future hurricane Gabrielle will impact the pattern much, with high pressure likely to last a fair while. If anything, the remnants could push up some warm air to start October.

The persistent rain is now gone. Final rainfall total for the event here in Wakefield was 42.7mm. Totals fairly widely have been in the 30-50mm range, with some spots at 60-80mm. Now we say hi to high pressure moving in!

A nice illustration of the inequity of rainfall distribution across the UK. Be surprised if it doesn’t become a much bigger issue with the devolved nations as shortages in England become greater and more acute. By Alister Rae via LinkedIn

It’s only a couple of weeks ago we were concerned about parched landscapes, water stressed crops and emerging drought. Inevitably flood barriers are now going up and multiple flood warnings in place.
