Only 5 Category 4 or stronger hurricanes on record have come within 50 miles of Jamaica, all from the east. Only one – Gilbert in 1988 – made landfall. Melissa's slow approach from the south raises the risk of severe coastal storm surge into Jamaica's southern bays and harbors.

UPDATE: Hurricane Melissa is now a Category 5 with winds of 160 mph. The NHC is currently forecasting #Melissa to make landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 Monday night into Tuesday morning, which would be the strongest hurricane on record for the island. This is only the 2nd time

#Melissa is now the strongest #hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season, and it continues to deepen. Pressure has fallen to 913mb. There’s evidence to suggest it is already even stronger than 160 mph winds. It’s possible that will be adjusted upward soon.
