No big deal... we are just waiting to see if a tropical cyclone develops in the western Caribbean Sea and tracks into the Gulf of Mexico next week. Meanwhile, the ocean heat content is record high for the date in *both* bodies of water. 🧐πŸ₯΅

Tropical moisture from #Pulasan will combine with a frontal boundary to produce heavy rain across the Korean Peninsula & #Japan Friday through Sunday, local time. There is a risk of flooding and mudslides.

This year's climatological peak in Atlantic tropical cyclone activity has been characterized by unusually quiet conditions. Check out how ACE starts well above average in August, but ends up flatlining & falling below average as numerous waves fail to develop:

Climatologically speaking, only ONE hurricane has hit Texas in Oct.-Nov, and only 7 in Sept., since 1950. #txwx Just something to keep in mind. Much much bigger historical probability in Eastern Gulf.

While the 00Z GFS no longer has a trillion dollar hurricane striking the Lower 48, it does have a mega low near Dutch Harbor, Alaska on Day 11. While this solution is very unlikely to happen, multiple runs in a row have very strong lows in the vicinity.

Among the more amusing apocalyptic predictions for next week is the GDAPS/UM model, which is predicting the second-deepest pressure in a hurricane since 1850 in the middle of the Gulf -- an 885 mb storm.

NC12 on Ocracoke remains open, although we did see ocean overwash in several places at high tide. The tide is coming down now, so we are planning to keep the highway open during daylight hours. HOWEVER, be aware that a nighttime closure is possible. Drive with EXTREME caution.
