Have you seen NatureScot 's new Grassland Fungi Map for Scotland? ^_^ Check out this blog from NatureScot Bryophytes, Fungi and Lichens Adviser, Kat O’Brien: scotlandsnature.wordpress.com/2024/08/19/gra…
Fantastic day on Mar Lodge Estate National Nature Reserve NTS for a #MountainBirch fieldtrip focused on #paleoecology with St Andrews Geography & SD. What can the past & present tell us about the potential extent of #mountain #woodland that we could support in the future if we remove the pressure of overgrazing?
The Dwarf Birch (Betula nana) at Mar Lodge Estate National Nature Reserve NTS is absolutely stunning! It's blowing my mind just how it can grow tall & vigorous as part of an upland dwarf-shrub & #mountain #woodland mosaic in Scotland. If we reduce grazing pressure on a landscape-scale, these are the results! 🤩
Nascent pine and juniper montane woodland at 700m altitude in an autumnal Coire Etchachan today. Possible translation for Coire Etchachan is the juniper coire, but Adam Watson wasn’t certain of the translation Mountain Woodland Action Group
This week we hosted an engagement event at #Corrour for Loch Abar Mòr, a burgeoning partnership in west Scotland embarking on #nature #restoration at landscape-scale in which people & wildlife can thrive. #Venison was absolutely on the menu! #NatureRichLochaber SCOTLAND: The Big Picture
Lovely afternoon walking up through the restored altitudinal #treeline at #NTSBenLawers National Trust for Scotland & visiting the local #mountain #woodland beaver dam. Common Hawker dragonflies (Aeshna juncea) were enjoying the new #beaver #wetland habitat! #restoration #mountainwoodland
Brilliant new edition of the Mountain Woodland Action Group's publication Scrubbers' is available to read now, including a lovely article by Lynn Cassells about the #CairngormsConnect Tree Nursery community and many great stories of restoration work by our friends and neighbours.
Out this week monitoring the montane willows which we planted in upper Glen Derry & Coire Etchachan in 2021. Pleased to say that the survival of the willows remains high with over 90% of the willows from the 330 that we monitor still alive and well. #rewilding SCOTLAND: The Big Picture
I recently completed a project for NatureScot mapping relict & #restored #mountain #woodland across Scotland, covering 18,538 data points & 10,844ha. Read more & find open data download links in my Mountain Woodland Action Group Scrubbers' Bulletin article here: researchgate.net/publication/38…
Huge thanks Mar Lodge Estate National Nature Reserve NTS team for sharing with us the >2k hectares of natural regeneration your commitment & hard work have created. Brilliant to hear how adaptive management esp deer management is paying off. An inspiration & a special place! National Trust for Scotland shaila rao Andrew Painting
