I went to the grocery store this afternoon. As I was walking in I heard a woman yell to me from her car. I walked over and found an elderly woman and her husband. She cracked her window open a bit more, and explained to me nearly in tears that they are afraid to go in the store.

The 2020 Boston Marathon is postponed until September 14, 2020. My top priority is to make sure all City of Boston residents and visitors are healthy and safe from the #coronavirus. Thank you, Governor Maura Healey, Boston Athletic Association, John Hancock for all your support.

The Marathon plays a major role for local charities and the local economy. Our hope is that fundraising will remain strong, and our plan is to make the weekend of 9/14 a cornerstone in a campaign to help local businesses recover.

I want to discourage anyone from running the course on April 20. The roads will not be closed and first-responders will be pulled away. You have the chance to run in a historic, once-in-a-lifetime race in September and I hope everyone will embrace that.

We’ve shown before, that no matter the challenge, to our Marathon or to our city, we are #BostonStrong. And that’s what we will be again this year, in the face of this crisis and on Marathon Monday.
