Statement from Warwickshire Parent Carer Voice about the comments made by Warwickshire County Council members

Please bear with me as I'm not a natural user on this platform but think it's important that this is shared! (1)

You may have seen the news reporting about the Warwickshire Children & Young People Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Thursday 25th January and seen some of the comments made by our County Councillors. (2)

Having watched the recording of the full meeting at the weekend we have been seeking advice on how to proceed. (3)

We have raised our concerns regarding this with local authority officers and with Councillor Marian Humphreys (Chair of the Committee). (4)

On behalf of SEND families in Warwickshire we have submitted formal complaints against Councillors Morgan, Hammersley and Golby regarding their actions in the meeting. (5)

Today we met with councillors at the SEND Members Panel and used this opportunity to share that the language used to describe us and our families is unacceptable and to provide them with opportunity to work with us to gain understanding (6)

An update on yesterday's meetings... First of all it is important to note that as we submitted a formal complaint against Councillors Golby, Hammersley, Morgan there is a process that now needs to be followed and we are limited in what we can share in relation to that.

We had a positive SEND Members Panel meeting and we are reassured that the Councillors that attended that meeting have much more understanding about what it means to have a child with additional needs and the impact of that on our daily lives. This the statement that was read

We are sure that there will be more updates in the days / weeks to come - watch this space... Hopefully Warwickshire County Council will take us up on our offer of providing training for our councillors and we can prevent something like this happening again. 🙂
