Faith Ringgold’s 1971 protest in front of the old Whitney Museum w/ the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition was a pushback against the institution’s questionable practices. 46 yrs later, her work inspired by being called a ni**er at that protest would be displayed @ the Whitney 🙃

Absolutely boiling livid to find out the University of Wyoming has capitulated to right wing extremists and canceled our annual Black 14 Summer Institute for high school students. Instead of being firm and enduring the storm, we choose at every corner to capitulate.

RIP Faith Ringgold (1930-2024), who leaves an incredible legacy after a life dedicated to art &activism. In story quilts such as the French Collection, she used textile art to intervene in narratives of art history & modernism, rewriting the canon to centre the Black female gaze

Using slave burial DNA to link descendent communities will be groundbreaking.

I think often of the desperation of formerly enslaved ppl placing ads to find mothers, fathers, children, & other family.

Finally, the spirits will get their wish & be rested.

This is why we want to do Midwest Futures in American Studies Journal. Climate change and the question of water access will be an essential conversation for future issues of migration, housing, & survival. The Midwest is already the center of such questions.
