Remembering Congressman John Lewis, an icon of civil rights movement and described as the “conscious of our nation.” John Lewis’ message of hope, love, courage and equality is just as important today as in 1965, and it is our responsibility to move it forward.

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the dropping of atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Even as we mourn the horrific loss of life, we should be reminded that embracing the humanity of all people and seeking peaceful coexistence is more important today than ever.

In honor of the 20th Anniversary of 9/11, let’s pause to remember the people who lost their lives and courageous work of first responders who gave of themselves selflessly. Let’s also not forget how we came together to care for and support each other during that difficult time.

Today we pause to recognize the service and sacrifice of our armed forces veterans, and especially our veterans here at Western among our students, staff and faculty. Our nation will forever be in debt for their selfless sacrifice.

While we honor the legacy of Dr. King today, we also need to reflect on the progress we have made on equity and inclusion for all people and communities in our institutions and society and the work we need to do to practice true equality and justice for all.
