TODAY @ 10a, Friends of the National WWII Memorial & the National Mall NPS will hold a special Memorial Day ceremony, honoring the 400,000+ servicemembers who died in the war effort. They're also marking 20yrs since the WWII Monument's commemoration.

Celebrated the 20th anniversary of the WWII Memorial Friends with a lifting tribute to the legacy of the Greatest Generation. To date, more than 100 million have visited since the National WW II Memorial its opening. Humbled to receive the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee UNITY Award.
U.S. Army Sergeant Sylvester Antolak of St. Clairsville, OH, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions in Cisterna di Littoria, Italy, on May 24, 1944.

World War II Veteran Minnie Shipp of Albuquerque, NM, turns 103 today.
Minnie was a trailblazer during World War II, serving as one of the first women to join the Coast Guard when Congress created the U.S. Coast Guard Women’s Reserve.

WWII Veteran John Homan, of State College, PA, wrote a memoir that came out last week. The 100 year old worked with Jared Frederick, a Penn State Altoona history instructor, to write “Into the Cold Blue: My World War II Journeys with the Mighty Eighth Air Force.”

ICYM: Yesterday, Friends announced Rep. Marcy Kaptur as the recipient of the 4th Annual Brigadier General Charles E. McGee UNITY Award for her tireless efforts to see the National World War II Memorial take its place on the National Mall in Washington, DC.

WWII Veteran Clarence “Bud” Anderson of Auburn, CA, died on May 17, 2024 at 102. Anderson was a celebrated U.S. Air Force pilot who was the last surviving triple ace of WWII and the highest scoring P-51 Mustang pilot in his squadron.

World War II veteran, lawyer and musician, Victor W. “Vic” Fuentealba, 101, died on April 17, 2024 in Towson, MD. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and in 1944 was sent to Europe where he served with the famed 84th Infantry Division.

Ted Novak, 101, from Linfield, PA, a thrice-wounded veteran of some of WWII’s most famous and deadliest battles, has received France’s highest honor, the Legion of Honor, from the French government.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced recently that U.S. Army Air Force Tech. Sgt. Kenneth J. McKeeman, 23, of Brooklyn, New York, killed over Toulon, France during World War II, was accounted for Sept. 18, 2023.

Sherman David London, of Southbury, CT, an award-winning journalist at the Waterbury Republican-American newspapers, the longest serving member of the Connecticut Freedom of Information Commission and a World War II veteran, died May 2, 2024 at the age of 102.
