This morning, representatives from our Parliament Watch team: @AbahoBrighten and Chemonges. M. Timothy appeared before the Committee on Gender, Labour, and Social Development to present our views on the Employment (Amendment) Bill 2021. This is under our Legislative Advocacy Programming.

The Employment (Amendment) Bill 2022 seeks to convert casual employment to long long-term employment, stating that a person shall not be employed as a casual laborer for a period exceeding four months.

The bill also seeks to regulate the employment of Ugandans abroad by mandating the Minister responsible to prescribe minimum employment standards applicable to persons who are recruited for employment abroad.

It also tasks an employer to ensure that migrant workers have a valid work permits, as well as keep register of all migrant workers employed at the work place and intends to mandate employers to establish reasonable lactation stations for breastfeeding mothers at workplaces.

Congratulations to our WFD Uganda team for receiving the Good Practice Award from the East African Youth Parliament! WFD was recognized for believing and supporting youth participation in the East Africa Community (EAC) legislation and integration processes.

WFD in Uganda has been active in placing young people at the forefront of the regional development agenda of the EAC. In partnership with youth organisations across the East Africa region, WFD implemented the East African Commonwealth Youth Leaders Initiative.

The initiative provided a platform for youth leaders to raise their voices and meaningfully participate in discussions about governance issues which affect development in the region. WFD remains committed to promoting the inclusion and participation of youth in Ugandan politics.
