Garden Tip of the Day: Group 1 Clematis (C. alpina, armandii, cirrhosa, macropetala and montana) bloom in early spring. Their buds set the previous season on old wood. They only need light pruning after flowering to clear out dead wood and keep stems tidy.

We canceled our booth at Green Spring Gardens big plant sale today due to the rains - can’t risk getting our books and back issues soaked. But, I plan to be in the PVC-NARGS booth from 12-3 and running around doing some plant shopping myself. I hope to see you there!

The day signs are here! I’m planting red clover in my “hellstrip” for the pollinators. I have a few extras. If you take the pledge at reduceyourlawndat.com and see me at big Plant sale tomorrow, I can give you one!

Garden Tip of the Day: Annuals live for one growing season. Perennials die-back in winter, then return for the next growing season. Some perennials though are short-lived and only come back for a few years (mums), while others can live for decades (peonies).

A little birdie told me that the at near Germantown, Maryland, are now in bloom and shared these pics with me to pass on to you. Today would be a fabulous time to go visit them.

I love hearing sightings of one of my books “out in the wild” 😜 in this case The Urban Garden (co-written with Teresa Speight) was spotted by Barbara Faust at the Norfolk Botanical Garden gift shop.
