Great management requires aspects of leadership, but not all leadership scenarios require management. You can be a great leader even if you're not formally managing people.

When it comes time for performance reviews, they should be summarizing the work of the person. If there are surprises for the candidates during this time, this means they haven't received proper feedback often enough.

It’s easy to root for someone when they are succeeding in a domain outside your own. It’s much more difficult when they are succeeding in your domain. The comparison bug kicks in and makes you feel that insidious tinge of jealousy or envy. We all need to learn to fight back.

Self-reflection prompt: How did I use my time lately? Look at your calendar and examine any other time blocks you didn't put in there and reflect on what returns you got out of them. Both short-term and long term.

Sometimes we need to go beyond 1-1s to develop a holistic understanding of the person we’re managing. Effective 1-1s are very important for managers to figure out what’s going on with the report and to also bond with the report in general. 👇
