I don’t know who programmed Phantom Thread as a Christmas movie but you know what I’m into it

(As much as I’m keen on PTA, I thought I was hating Phantom Thread for most of my watching it but I walked out the cinema with a love for movies and a distrust of omelettes)

Every actor in this movie is absolutely *in* this movie in a way that feels kinda rare these days? So many movie performances seem to float, with one foot still out in reality, v self-aware of the artifice. Everyone here feels like they’ve burrowed into this story.

I’m not describing this well. Like a lot of performances feel to me half turned a out to the audience? Keeping you bubbling (often nicely) on the surface, aware of its dialogue with cultural commentary. The ones here grab you and drag you right down into their own strange space.
