A legend tells that the goddess Flora took pity on the Wisteria, a proud, but flowerless, trailing plant. Each spring she festoons its bare branches with flowers, but to give it humility, decrees it must rely on another’s support to climb and display its blooms.

A story tells that when Father Sun and Mother Moon’s star-children wander too far they fall to Earth. Unable to rescue them, the Sun transforms them into rayed dandelion that gradually change into tiny parachuting stars and try to return home.

Common names for Aquilegia include granny's bonnet, columbine & doves-at-the-fountain. In olden times it was called “Herb Leonis” & believed to be a favourite of lions. It was said that rubbing its juice on your hands would bestow you with the courage of a lion!
