A3. Shortly after common core came into play we were looking at slope and equations and of course tables and graphs. It was the students who made the connection to slope triangles that we’d studied earlier that year, not their teacher. I was humbled and amazed. #openupmath

A4 8th grade curriculum we were look at slope multiple ways. Look at vert & horiz distances & compare to slope. A s observed, it works for every point! I thought, does it? Well it does but I didn’t see it until playing with it after class. It’s point slope form silly! #openupmath

A5. We always say, when you don’t know what to do, do what you know. Build a table. We then learn to build a table in Desmos. Then we learn to build and reference a table on a it84. These multiple access points to the same concept help deepen ss understanding and flex #openupmath

A1. Of course you have to our pair share deals; co-crafting questions; but the biggest thing isn’t an mlr; it’s just listening and actually letting kids hear one another. Restating in other words is very helpful. It also honors and amplifies student thinking. #openupmath

A3. I randomly group students in 3s for the next week each Friday. It just took me too long to do it daily. I duties in the hall to attend to so I can’t be there to supervise seating each day. #openupmath I randomize using a spreadsheet and randomize range into my seating chart.

A3. Each lesson has a low floor entry so that’s not an issue. I just heard Fawn Nguyen speak on an old podcast about actually starting with the Ready for More or the later questions so all ss get a shot at the meat. I’m going to try that once in a while. #OpenUpMath

A4. Usually setting the stage with a connection to real-life is already built in. Trying to make situations even more personal and relevant by connecting them to our school or current events or money or shopping or plagues. You know—real life. #OpenUpMath

A5. Walking around and asking students if they would share their work; asking students to explain their thinking; asking students to explain the work of other learners; keep the pace up. #OpenUpMath

And just like that, it’s my 10 year Twitter anniversary! I take this occasion to thank Lydia Kirkman and the #MTBoS #mtbos community. You changed my life—well my math resource life.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the college World Series. Even though Wake is no longer in it, I’m invested. So. Much. Drama. Who can’t love this? Thank you #BaseBall #CollegeWorldSeries #wakeforestbaseball.

I think this pic my husband took at the Costco was in the systems section of my algebra 1 text book in 1976. #iteachmath #MTBoS
