Another preprint alert! 📄 In this paper co-authored by Matthias Huss, an attempt is made to intercompare glacier models on 21st-century glacier runoff for the world's major river basins. 🌍 Check it out: egusphere.copernicus.org/preprints/2024…
Can geotextile white blankets stop global glacier mass loss? No, says #VAW member Matthias Huss in Nature Water. The issue is scalability. The real solution lies in reducing greenhouse gas emissions globally to save our glaciers. 🌍 🔗 : nature.com/articles/s4422…
Another exciting update from Marit van Tiel, who recently lectured on glacier hydrology at #Findelengletscher for Inspiring Girls* Expeditions Europe. She captivated a group of curious young girls who might become future mountain hydrologists! 🌍🔬 📸: Fabienne Meier (Girls on Ice 2024)
Last week was packed with fieldwork! 🌍 In Episode 1, PhD student Janosch Beer and several team members visited 4 different glaciers in #Valais, installing englacial thermistors and conducting #GPR surveys.
In Episode 3, #VAW member Mauro Werder ventured to the Aletsch Glacier to measure supraglacial channels, while Matthias Huss was out on Persgletscher. 🏔️📏
Glacier temperature check! 🧊🌡️Group member Mylène Jacquemart and Ethan Welty (Wold Glacier Monitoring Service) have compiled englacial temperatures from 690 boreholes on 186 glaciers. Check out their 🗒️preprint and 💻dataset at zenodo.org/records/133341… & essd.copernicus.org/preprints/essd…
As kilian jornet pushes human limits by climbing #4k peaks in the Alps, the Kilian Jornet Foundation is raising awareness of climate challenges. #VAW member Christophe Ogier and several of our projects are featured on their interactive map. Check it out here: kilianjornetfoundation.org/project/alpine… Go Kilian!
Greetings from our yearly #glaciological #fieldcourse! ❄️☀️ This year, we ventured out with ETH Zurich students to learn about field measurements and data interpretation. Good weather, great mood, and lots of fun! Will you join us next year? 🫵🏔️
Preprint alert! #VAW PhD student Marijn van der Meer introduces miniML-MB, a machine-learning model for glacier mass balance. 🏔️ It outperforms simple PDD models in most cases—exciting news for future ML applications in glacier modeling! 💻 Check it out: egusphere.copernicus.org/preprints/2024…
