MMID’s own Dr Barbara Porto presents her work on repurposing of a drug to fight Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) infection which is a deadly respiratory infection.

MMID’s own Kevin Coombs presented a tour de force of work from his lab and collaborators over the past 15 or so years identifying how various viral infection alter certain host cellular proteins which could inform mechanisms of viral pathogenesis. An impressive body of work.

MMID welcomes Dr Craig Cohen from UCSF who presented his leading work on altering the microbiome to prevent bacterial vaginosis. He is also here as external examiner for Ruth Matewalah’s PhD defence tomorrow. Welcome Craig.

Dr Yoav Keynan presents to MMID on his outstanding research program on HIV and pneumonia including studies in Medellin Colombia and Winnipeg.

Dr Julie Lajoie, who holds the Francis Plummer Professorship in Global Infectious Diseases in MMID, presents her independent research program on the impact of sex hormones on infectious disease, which she established in August 2023.

Dr Andrew Halayko, dept of Physiology and Pathophysiology at UM, presents his work on the role of oxidative stress in asthma. Important interactions to explore with respiratory infections.

Dr Jim Strong from the National Microbiology Lab, and appointed in MMID, presented his exciting research program in high consequence pathogens such as Ebola.

MMID’s own PhD candidate, Toby Le, gave an exceptional TEDx talk on how to make science more inclusive and less “pale, frail and stale”. Well done Toby!!

Very proud of the MMID trainees who had honourable mentions, won poster prizes, major award prize or individual awards at the Manitoba Student Health Research Forum.

Dr Larry Gelmon presents to MMID on the history and current status of the Sex Worker Outreach Program which is an HIV prevention and care program in Nairobi Kenya for over 40,000 sex workers and key populations. SWOP forms a platform for research projects run many MMID members.

Had some great discussions today with Joyce Adhiambo, Larry Gelmon and MMID members on community priorities, current and future research projects based in Nairobi, Kenya.

Welcome to the incoming MMID graduate students, some seen here at the MMID orientation. With 27 students starting this year, this is the largest intake of students MMID has ever had. We look forward to the progress and successes they will have during their time in MMID.
