A phenomenon so rare in Britain that all our native languages have no word for it, is the space on a mountain between a cliff face and the receding summer snow pack. In German it is known as randkluft.

On the 30 August 2015 I visited one of the best examples, on Ben Macdui.

The little known and highly unusual Saltcoats Castle, hidden away half a mile to the south of Gullane in East Lothian. It probably dates back to the years after 1590, despite a date mark that appears to be two centuries older. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/gullane/saltco…

You can’t ask a dead man who pulled the trigger. ‘A Tangled Web’ is a fast-paced new thriller set in northern Scotland. Oldshoremore in north-west Sutherland has an important role as the story develops.

This is the UK's snowiest place, photographed on Saturday. The location is Garbh Choire Mòr (big, rough corrie), situated at the UK's 3rd highest mountain Braeriach. Some people might be surprised to see so much snow here, given that we're now into late April. (1/4)

Our old photo this week is from September 1964 and shows the queues for the new Forth Road Bridge on its opening day. This is taken from the Echline junction looking north. A rare example of a road being less busy as time goes on! 🛣🤩

Melrose Abbey (Scotland) Undiscovered Scotland image & reconstruction mock-up. Its surprising how much the restored flying buttresses at Melrose remind me of the buttress work at Rosslyn & how even grander Rosslyn could have been if it had been completed to original Plan.
