I support compulsory Gr R for all our children, as per the Bela Act, but these articles highlight the massive issues SA will have in funding it and dealing with currently unqualified teachers. news24.com/southafrica/ed… and news24.com/southafrica/ed…

A few days ago, I posted about the lack of funding needed to ensure that we can provide universal Grade R education. This article provides a lot more background to this fundamental lack: dailymaverick.co.za/article/2025-0…

It seems to me that where there's smoke, there is fire (in this instance). The evidence against Zungu is too compelling. And, once again, who suffers? Our children, of course 😠 news24.com/southafrica/r1…

I like this Min. of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube . Her heart and strategies are spot on. I hope she gets the chance carry out the difficult but necessary changes. dailymaverick.co.za/opinionista/20…

This aggression by some parents against teachers can only have negative impacts on teacher morale and mental health, and cause fewer quality people to choose teaching as a profession. I am so glad this has been brought into the public domain. news24.com/southafrica/ed…

I am v. excited about the new NETC set up by Siviwe Gwarube. It contains some high-quality people, like Nicky Roberts, and will be covering some key matters, such as improving our early grade literacy & numeracy, reducing teachers' admin burden, & overhauling the quintile system.

I love the move away from focussing so excessively on Matric and so much more on ECD and the Foundation Phase. The shift started at least 10 years ago, but feels to me like it is accelerating. #ECDandFP #earlygradesmatter dailymaverick.co.za/article/2025-0…

Please help me spread the word: the Principal of Kronendal Primary School in Hout Bay, CPT, has put in motion his resignation/retirement, and the search is starting for a replacement. If you can think of an ideal applicant, please forward them the attached letter from the KPS SGB

In my experience visiting schools around the country, textbook shortages are indeed a real problem. But making tablet purchases the scapegoat is problematic, since w/out them many of these learners will never work on any ICT device other than cellphones news24.com/southafrica/ed…

BELA Act: all correctly aged children must attend Gr R in 2026 KZN DoE: every school with Gr 1 must offer Gr R from 2026 Schools: sure, please provide funding and infrastructure DoE and DBE: ummmmmm, please hold while we try to sort this out. news24.com/southafrica/ed…

This article, which summarises an official report, shows an alarming lack of leadership and governance in the Mpumalanga PED. #schoolsincrisis indeed news24.com/southafrica/ed…

This is a lovely "good news" story of an NGO (Save our Schools) stepping in to provide access to water & sanitation facilities in GP schools. But the question must be asked of Gauteng Department of Education : why are YOU not providing these basic services? dailymaverick.co.za/article/2025-0…

This is a fabulous read on what research says about the good and bad of homework: edutopia.org/visual-essay/t… The results, in some cases, might surprise you!

"Provincial education departments fail to spend R150m." This was money allocated for the NSNP, MSP, school infrastructure, etc. Whaaaaaaat?! As a prof says, "No justification can adequately explain the incompetence of not fully utilising allocated budgets" news24.com/southafrica/ed…

I am impressed at how much effort David Maynier and WCEDNews put into teacher training - see, for example, a R500m allocation for such over the next 3 years capeargus.co.za/news/2025-10-0…
