In 2016, a joint team from DPAA & the University of Wisconsin-Madison travelled to northern France to find the crash site of a P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft.  They spent 3 weeks searching for the wreckage of the aircraft, which had crashed on 27 May 1944. #POWMIA 2/

An initial search for the site, based on local eye-witness reports, failed to locate the aircraft. They then sourced an image from NCAP, taken 2 days after the crash, on 29 May 1944. This then enabled them to precisely locate the aircraft impact point on modern mapping #POWMIA 3/

On excavating the site, they successfully recovered parts of the aircraft along with human remains. Following forensic and DNA analysis, the remains were identified as those of the pilot, Lt Frank Fazekas. #POWMIA #youarenotforgotten Crash site: ncap.org.uk/feature/missin… 04/End

A painting was created of the last moments of the “Shirley D” on 23 Dec 1944. We believe it was commissioned by a family member of one of the crew, but a copy was purchased and hangs in our offices at UW–Madison Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA)

Today we remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, doubly appropriate to remember Lt. Frank Fazekas, our first archaeological recovery. He was shot down over #France OTD in 1944 flying a P-47 near Saint-Omer. He is now in Arlington National Cemetery ABMC Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) UW–Madison
