Our Alumni Advisory Board held its Spring Board meeting on campus last Friday followed by a field trip to Ijams Nature Center. Current GTAs, George Denny and Lili Binetti, took them through our EEPS 101 field trip emphasizing the structure, sedimentary systems, and economic geology.

Recently students in Limnology (EEPS 469/569) sampled and analyzed water from around our region, including an urban stream near campus, a headwater stream in the Smokies, and the KUB drinking water plant. #thirstythursday

Learning to read scientific papers is a critical skill for our students, as is the ability to communicate data in more approachable ways! Our Paleoecology students (EEPS 423/523) made visual abstracts summarizing works that they read. Can you tell what they read about? #scicomm

Did you feel the 4.1 earthquake this morning? Our seismometer in Strong Hall did! While earthquakes aren't that uncommon here, we haven't had one that big since 2018. Let us know what you felt!#earthquake

Some of our students and faculty had the opportunity for inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) training last week, an instrument that allows for elemental analyses of samples in geology and environmental science. UT Arts & Sciences

Graduate student Kaitlyn Gauvey and Dr. Linda Kah recently had a new paper come out about how chert forms and what it tells us about Precambrian life. Read it here: frontiersin.org/journals/earth… UT Arts & Sciences

Summer means field work for our researchers! Graduate student Shymah recently went out to collect Ordovician fossils for her research, with the help of one of our post docs Dr. Kat Jordan-Burmeister.
