Brett Barden presented the Political Action report for District 3, highlighting developments in the political scene in Western Canada since the last conference in 2018, and the role our union played in bringing positive political change in the Western provinces and territories.

Julia McKay, the D3 Indigenous Engagement Coordinator, presented the Indigenous Engagement Report. Julia highlighted strategic support efforts aimed at helping local unions build stronger relationships with Indigenous members and communities. #betterworkforeverybody

National Director Marty Warren took the podium today, seizing the opportunity to thank everyone for their hard work in making our union as strong and resilient as it is today. In his remarks, Marty emphasized the importance of worker-centered trade and procurement policies.

The second panel discussion today focused on negotiating stronger contracts. Moderator Cindy Lee (USW Staff) asked the panelists about their bargaining experiences and the best practices that lead to significant wins.

Debra Burton, Legal Counsel for D3, and Shaheen Hirani, Head of the Legal Department at the CNO, provided a presentation to delegates. They offered a list of legal Dos and Don’ts for filing grievances, handling arbitrations, and addressing other legal disputes with employers.

The Day 2 closing speaker was USW Secretary-Treasurer John Shinn. He reminded everyone of the core values that keep our union strong and highlighted the importance of solidarity in achieving our collective goals and facing challenges together. #everyonehighlightsfollowers

There is no better way to kick off the final day than with remarks from former National Director Ken Neumann. Ken shared stories of wisdom, success and activism, drawing from his experience as a longtime labour activist and union leader. #betterworkforeverybody

Ed Kent, the Health, Safety & Environment staff representative at D3, presented the Health and Safety report this morning. Ed reported on the primary health and safety issues the district has been addressing since the last conference, as well as the progress that has been made.
