#MountStHelens May 18, 1980, 8:32 AM. A colossal landslide. Magma & hot fluids explode, surge outward like a hot hurricane. Column rises, ash falls for miles. Snowpack melts, mudflows converge, lahars move downvalley. A 9-hr eruption. Everything is changed.

#HVO geologists studying #Kilauea ’s 1924 eruptions are looking closely at ash. They’ve found at least 3 different magmas were interacting beneath Halema‘uma‘u at that time. Magma mixing could help explain why the eruptions were so explosive. #VolcanoWatch

#MountStHelens 1980: Bulge on north flank 1 mile long, 1/2 mile wide. Many geologists agreed it was only a matter of time before it failed. Concern great enough that most stopped driving into the area to check instruments. Trips made by helicopter in case a hasty exit was needed.

#MountStHelens 1980: Small bursts of steam & ash continue. Scientists believe a major eruption would be preceded by changes in seismicity or rate of bulging. They are uneasy, watching/tracking the volcano closely; hoping to provide adequate warning. #VolcanoAwarenessMonth

Mount St. Helens is hot & the hype is everywhere. In 1980, volcanic activity is a novelty & everyone wants to gawk. But weeks of closures & roadblocks have residents on edge, growing weary of life near an active volcano with restrictions & uncertainties.
#VolcanoAwarenessMonth
Late March 1980, media swoop in to cover #MountStHelens unrest. But weeks pass with no lava. As steam & ash blasts dwindle, so does interest. But on May 18, 1980 the catastrophic event is broadcast to the world. The power of explosive volcanism is humbling.
The Alaska Volcano Observatory's 2024 field season is upon us! There will be volcanoes. Helicopters. So many batteries. And hopefully not a lot of bears.

A team of scientists visited the new thermal area near Tern Lake to sample gases and measure temperatures. Today's #Yellowstone #CalderaChronicles shows how their data provide a snapshot into how thermal areas in Yellowstone develop.
