Light Detection & Ranging (LiDAR) is a remote sensing system used to measure veg & fuels. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service fire managers recently collected LiDAR data using a terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) to monitor changes after haz fuel reduction & #RxFire . #FireScience #PostFire #NotYourOrdinaryJob

For the 3rd year, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service future wildland fire leaders attended our Fire Management Academy at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife ServiceNCTC. The group spent the week learning leadership skills to prepare them to lead our org. into the future. The week-long academy also included a staff ride to antietamnps
While it may seem counterintuitive, fire can create ideal habitats for our bat buddies. With the reduction of clutter & creation of open forests, bats have opportunity to roost in newly formed snags & feast on flying insects.

Since 2012, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service works w/ the U.S. Air Force in wildlife conservation via #rxfire on defense lands. Burns enhance wildlife habitat but reduce vegetation near flight lines to mitigate bird strike risks.

Our best guess? Wildland firefighters typically walk an average of 5 miles per day as they cover the terrain of a fire area. However, hilly or rough terrain lead them to walk up to 20 miles per day.
