New: as of 2:23 AM ET/8:23 PM HST, we’re beginning to see tsunami waves reach Hawaii. First waves have been around 4-7 feet, but first ≠ biggest. A 7.7 foot fluctuation in water levels has been observed in Kahului! Here’s your early morning update:

We are about to witness a geological tsunami wave pass through the waves generated by a meteorological Major Hurricane. The chances of these two events coinciding like this is just exceptionally low and is unlike anything we’ve documented in the modern era.

This is almost certainly incorrect. Data does not support anything remotely close to this. (A 15 foot drop in water level would correspond to a 30 foot trough-to-crest wave). Current indications are of something maybe a third the size.

It looks like the majority of Hawaii will escape without serious issues, BUT there will be locally significant damage to some stretches of coastline where bathymetry (shape of seafloor) and shape of coastline channel/focus tsunami effects.

Continuing to see some pretty significant wave action at Hilo Bay, Hawaii, likely also enhanced by geography. Very prominent spikes, with a nearly 5ft crest-to-trough reading just observed.

Before the next time a major tsunami threat develops… I think it would be very intuitive to educate the public (for what it’s worth) that tsunami waves are not anything like you see in Hollywood films. They are way more discreet, but you will certainly notice receding waters,

Widespread storms will develop Thursday afternoon and continue through the night. Isolated wind damage is possible early. We are becoming increasingly concerned about flash flooding potential with this activity, particularly across the Moderate Risk area. #PAwx #NJwx #DEwx #MDwx
