Today is Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day. This annual holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865 - 2 1/2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation - when federal troops arrived in Galveston, TX, to announce all enslaved people were freed.
