Many people are thinking of the recommendations in the context of the current structures and based on their own experiences. But how might these recommendations change the current structures?

In addition to the low rate, the UC MOP down payment is 10% of the purchase price, and you could borrow half of that through a supplemental short term loan. In a market where the median home price is now $1 million, this is a big deal.

I suspect that most incoming junior faculty at University of California will not be able to afford a house without this program. Another huge blow to the competitiveness of this university. Sad.

Speaking from personal experience, this won't just impact recruitment, but also retention. Expect an exodus of junior faculty over the next few years from the UCs if they don't figure this out.

Between the potential elimination of MOP loans and the rather large reduction in pension benefits to faculty hired after 2013, junior faculty have been, and will be, at a significant financial disadvantage

Fellow UC senior faculty: contact your department chair, dean, and Senate chair. Ask them to press the administration to honor existing offer letters and to find a solution that doesn't limit the key mechanism to recruit and retain in this housing market.
