The first investigation of genomic diversity among people buried at Machu Picchu has revealed surprising diversity. The DNA in the 15th-century remains was degraded, but scientists were still able to sequence it with techniques developed at UCSC Paleogenomics Lab news.ucsc.edu/2023/07/machu-…
Check out the latest on biodiversity monitoring, eDNA, and sneaky invasive crayfish from Kim Ballare!
Also in this release was a paper from Beth Shapiro UCSC Paleogenomics Lab that sequences the genome of #Balto , the heroic sled dog who helped save Nome, Alaska from a diphtheria outbreak. They found distinct differences from modern sled dog populations. news.ucsc.edu/2023/04/balto-…

We had a lovely time tabling at Blue Innovation today! Nothing better than spending an afternoon next to the ocean talking about our research 🌞👩🔬Kim Ballare Ciara Wanket Merly Escalona Chloé Orland
Congratulations to the newly minted Dr. Joshua Kapp! Hero of the UCSC Paleogenomics Lab for (among his many ideas) reinventing how we prepare our ancient DNA libraries. Yes, that’s a single-stranded DNA cake!
Stoked to be a part of this awesome project studying genomics of endangered birds and bumblebees - UCSC scholars join researchers statewide on a massive genomic study of California’s biodiversity news.ucsc.edu/2022/07/ca-con… via UC Santa Cruz
