From #AHAPerspectives in 2020: 'Why would the US Army ever honor the enemy?' asked Ty Seidule in #AHAPerspectives . 'Honoring Confederates reinforced the military’s white supremacist doctrine.' historians.org/publications-a…
Ty Seidule “abolishing SLAVERY — the cause and pretext of the Rebellion” There you have it folks: the principal historical actors *at the time* understood (by 1865) that abolishing slavery was the reason for the war.
Today is “Victory in Virginia” day. US Grant forced Lee and his rebellious army to surrender. 2m US soldiers (including nearly 200k African Americans) destroyed slavery, freed 4m from bondage, preserved democracy, and saved the USA. Here’s Grant’s proclamation.

Speaking of great generals, here's an opportunity to recommend Gen Ty Seidule's 'Robert E. Lee and Me: A Southerner's Reckoning with the Myth of the Lost Cause' for secondary libraries worldwide (ESPECIALLY in the South🙄).

On National #MedalofHonor Day, we remember the 1862 medal and the one still used by the Navy and USMC. Minerva wards off “the foul spirit of secession and rebellion,” represented by a crouching figure holding snakes. Our highest award is anti-Confederate. Huzzah!
Sen. Marsha Blackburn Spencer Lindquist 🇺🇸 'This is a complete non-issue,' said Ret. Brig. Gen. Ty Seidule, professor emeritus of history at West Point who was not involved with the changes to the statement. 'I can't imagine why anybody would be upset about it.'

Mini-update: Ty Seidule reached out to let the descendant of the enslaver know how moved he was that his book, 'Robert E. Lee & Me,' had any part in shaping the decision to share/donate these documents about the people his ancestors had enslaved.
