My personal #AussieBirdCount tally reached 3,000 just as the national count ticked above 3 million. Happy to contribute my 0.1% which is only so high because I locked upon some large flocks of cormorants, terns and coots. BirdLife Australia

Last night I saw Ange & the Boss, about the legendary Puskas time in Oz coaching South Melbourne FC at the GreekFilmFestival by Tony Wilson cam fink & Rob Heath. They still need funds for a full release so if you’re a football fan donate here documentaryaustralia.com.au/project/ange-a… #ALeague #realmadrid

Following a new study, it has been recommended that Slender-billed Curlew be declared extinct, putting to bed any hopes that the wader may still exist and marking the first known global bird extinction from mainland Europe: bit.ly/4hMX9qh

Go first time in years I’m not down the coast for NYE. So #lastbird for the year will be in central Melbourne and as the sun sets on 2024 it looks like it’s Sulphur-crested Cockatoo. Grey-headed Flying-foxes flying overhead now so I guess that’s #lastmammal taken care of too!

Actually, the early fireworks disturbed Little Corellas and Rainbow Lorikeets from their roosts. So it looks like Rainbow Lorikeet is my #lastbird of 2024.

First bird for 2025 was Little Corella calling from a roost when we got home from a neighbour’s New Year’s party. First one I actually saw was an Australian Magpie in the backyard this morning. What was yours? #firstbird

🤓 in just 6 years, australia's two main grids added 51 TWh/yr of wind+solar generation. …from 19.9% → 38.8% renewables. …equivalent to 6.6 large nuclear reactors, but much lower cost & much faster. even more impressive given there's no chance of nuclear here for 20+ years.

After 5 years of ‘do not disturb’ notifications at this time on a Thursday, I realise I need to switch it off as sadly I won’t be returning to the regular ‘Squawkback’ segment on ABC Melbourne Afternoons. Hoping I’ll get to talk birds on the station, just on a more ad hoc basis.

Current beach read. In a location only a few minutes away from where I showed the author Southern Emu-wren and Rufous Bristlebird. And I believe, Stephen Moss that we would also have seen starlings not too far away!

When trying to film something on heathwrens and Southern Emu-wrens try and upstage… or alt title: “SAVE on expensive audiology tests with this simple hack! Can you hear the high-pitched squeak of the emu-wren?”

Last day in the BirdLife Australia National Office before it moves to new premises. After 16 intense years here, I'm pretty much the last to leave the building. Lots of Charley Weaver vibes. #SpringfieldSquares #Iaintgoingnowhere

Unbelievable. #FFMV have just lit up #Glossyblackcockatoo habitat that is loaded with recent records and their fire sensitive feed trees, their only food source, black she-oaks. #StopburningHabitat #GunaiKurnaiCountry geg.org.au/glossy-black-c…

“The wonder of the curlew’s migration unites cultures across the flyway, their annual return a potent symbol of hope and renewal,” [I] said. “To consent to further habitat destruction obliterates that hope of a rich and balanced future.” theguardian.com/australia-news…

Sitting in the departure lounge at Doha Airport listening to the #aflpiescrows match. Nobody seems that keen to join in with me singing “Good Old Collingwood Forever” after the final siren. It’s like I’m in Adelaide.
