We love an Art Nouveau building. 🤩 Local architect Arthur Wakerley designed The Turkey Café in Leicester, which opened in 1901. It became a popular meeting place for women to discuss the progress of women’s rights. Men also gathered in the smoke room at the back of the café.

This timber-framed merchant’s house in Gloucester, dating back to the late 16th century, has been restored. 🙌 26 Westgate is the largest surviving historic timber-framed townhouse in England and has been on our #HeritageAtRisk Register since 2012.

Saved from being put in the skip, I've collected these 4 original doors from an 1860's property, currently being 'done up'. I've also received a call this morning from another 'developer' who has around eight that he's removing from a late Victorian house. Shame, but I'll save em

Surveying a house in Leicestershire. Its all about the brickwork. Early 18thC bricks w/ angled skintlings & mid-19thC bricks w/ horizontal skintlings. Skintlings are the creases where the bricks were stacked in the kiln. This changes from angled to horizontal in early 19thC.

Today we lost not only one of Britain’s greatest boxers, but a friend, a mentor, a warrior, Ricky Hatton. As fighters, we tell ourselves we’re strong — we train, we sweat, we take hits, we get up. But sometimes the hardest fight happens in silence, in the mind. Mental health

Shopfronts nearly always look better when they harmonise with the local identity rather than try to harmonise with the brand’s global identity.

What on earth is this? A bundle of reeds suspended from the roof of an 18th century Lincolnshire house. An uncommon sight but we have testimony from a former landowner to explain it. To find out more join me on 2 April for The Folklore of Ancient Buildings eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-folklore…
