Nobody is having the conversation about how the people we consider “breaking artists” (~1M-4M monthly listeners), financially speaking, make about as much as a *good salary job* but with more hrs, no benefits, and often an advance in need of recouping. Sustainability is success.

We were inspired by Chaz Cardigan’s amazing way of finding harmony in optimism & heartache. This song came emerged so quickly because of his gutting self-awareness paired with a genuine belief that things can get better. Also I love that it has a Cohen-esque “broken” Hallelujah

The experience I’ve had consulting music start ups has mostly been explaining how complicated the industry is, how embedded the challenges are, & convincing them success in “disruption” is gonna mean having to play the game just like an artist/label (i.e. relying heavily on luck)

Los Angeles-based Nathan Irving (@nateflaks) weaves beautiful crossword-minded imagery and symbolism within a stirring folk sound on “Crossword,” written during the 2020 lockdown and capturing the loneliness of bearing witness to other relationships. obscuresound.com/2023/10/nathan

It's the time of year where I'm reminded that a song written by a Jew as a very intentional criticism of faith, made popular (& more secular) by the doomed son of a doomed folk artist, & reintroduced to pop culture by an animated ogre is somehow a quintessential "Chrismas Song"

Been saying this for ages but Spotify being THE business (rather than part of a larger model) puts its strategy constantly on the ropes
