I still donโ€™t understand why major funding agencies like NIH donโ€™t have their own jounals that are mandatory and free to publish in if you are funded by them. It would solve many of the issues we have now and save those agencies a ton of money wasted on publication fees

So much of what passes for high impact research these days is descriptive, expensive and mind-numbingly boring. Whereโ€™s the mechanism?

Bacterial protein expression tweeps: I want to express 3 genes from a single plasmid. Is it better to have a T7 promoter in front of each gene, or only in front of the first gene with p2a sequences between each gene?

Another easy way is to register directly with the journal on the journal website (PIs do this when submitting a paper). You can enter areas of expertise and tick a box that says you are willing to be registered as a reviewer

One way is to contact journals and offer to review for them, attaching a CV of credentials. I began this when I started my first postdoc and was made a reviewer for Eukaryotic Cell and Yeast journals.

As students are receiving acceptance, waitlist, โ€œrejectionโ€ letters for PhD programs, Iโ€™ve gotten a lot of questions about โ€œwhy,โ€ and there are a LOT of background gears at play students donโ€™t always know about. Iโ€™ll share some and invite to add to this:

We outsource all our cloning and mutagenesis to companies-a major time saver especially when working with undergrads:
-Twist (Twist Bioscience) for smaller DNA constructs
-Genscript (@GenScript) for mutagenesis
-Vectorbuilder (@VectorBuilder) for yeast expression constructs.

Very exciting being on the editorial board during this new chapter! If you are working on chaperones or stress responses please consider submitting here ๐Ÿ˜€

Long shot, but would anyone be willing to share their PEDP document from an NIH MIRA grant? This is my first time writing one ๐Ÿ˜€
