Welcome news — coming as it does on day 1 of the Canada Strong program. A cloud of uncertainty has been lifted, allowing families and young people to book with confidence and take advantage of the opportunity to see more of our great country.

Alas, history indicates it may be a long wait! In 2015, Justin Trudeau promised to address the “unreasonable” 65% cost recovery requirement imposed on Marine Atlantic by the Harper Conservatives. It took his Liberal government almost nine years to deliver. cbc.ca/news/canada/ne…

VIA Rail marks the 120th anniversary of its Ocean train  – but what’s left to celebrate? – Transport Action Atlantic transportactionatlantic.ca/via-rail-marks…

Encouraging to hear VIA Rail’s CEO saying many of the same things TAA has been advocating for years. This guy is certainly trending in the right direction, but we’re not so sure Transport Canada is onside. Fixing the derelict track in northern NB is vital! cbc.ca/news/canada/no…

There are undoubtedly ways for VIA to reduce costs, but cutting service isn’t one of them! How about providing better service to Canadians to enhance the revenue side of the ledger? And government needs to show some leadership in resolving the perennial issues with CN.

A timely reminder! And the PM also promised a major reduction in Marine Atlantic rates, so it’s presumably also on Premier Hogan’s agenda. We are watching with interest to see how long it will take to address these internal trade barriers. share.google/EiiPGKQDANveh4…

Dsconcerting to see the importance so many Canadians attach to “car culture” factors — from the price of fuel to potholes in the streets. Helps explain why convenient, affordable and sustainable public transportation gets short-changed by politicians! narrativeresearch.ca/transportation…

Please repost if you agree that it’s just a little tone-deaf for VIA to be highlighting amenities no longer offered on the Ocean in this self-congratulatory video.

Applause! …accompanied by a not-so-gentle reminder that Canada’s national passenger rail network is in dire need of rebuilding coast to coast — not just the Toronto-Quebec City corridor. Let’s start with restoration of the derelict track used by VIA in northern New Brunswick.

A convincing argument from an experienced professional for transit investment in Newfoundland’s Northeast Avalon. As the author writes, the future of transportation is NOT individual car ownership! theindependent.ca/commentary/mak…

Good news here! Marine Atlantic should be well positioned for growth in the 2026 peak summer season. There will be accelerated demand for passenger vehicle capacity with the new lower rates that better reflect Ottawa’s constitutional obligation to NL. saltwire.com/newfoundland-l…

This is a sister ship to the former Atlantic Vision. Both 24 years old, and Marine Atlantic knew the Vision well. With 20-20 hindsight, wouldn’t they have been much better off had they held on to the Vision and retired the Ericsson two years ago? cbc.ca/news/canada/ne…

The car-focused NS government is seeking strategies to deal with congestion caused by too many autos on HRM streets. Let’s hope they’ll identify some solutions — but first they’ve got to recognize that “two cars in every driveway” is not sustainable. halifax.citynews.ca/2026/04/15/nov…?

Some of this actually makes sense! A good rail corridor from SJ to HFX already exists — it just needs to be better managed to accommodate an upgraded passenger service. This resolution merits a serious second look to determine what is reasonably feasible. tj.news/new-brunswick/…
