After all these years I finally found a high quality scan of this decade old magazine. In addition to this dated SpaceX MCT article that I really love, there's some real gems in here that I'm going to make a thread of 🧵

The International Mercury Explorer returns to Earth. This is my design for a crewed Mercury exploration vessel in the 2100s, based on the astrology sign for the planet. The front habitation ring spins, and the arms are massive EM generators to protect the crew from radiation.

A powerful pulsed laser can ablate the surface of an asteroid and create a burst of hot plasma that reveals its composition to a spectroscopic telescope. Depending on the pulse energy of this 'remote sampling' method, even subsurface composition can be investigated.
