I'm Tony DeRose from Pixar. For years I ran the graphics research group. Now I'm heading up our educational outreach efforts. #InfyXRoads.

A1: (1/3) Pixar helped co-founded the Young Makers Program (makered.org/youngmakers) and later Maker Ed. #InfyXRoads.

A1: (2/3) In 2015 we launched @pixarinabox in collaboration with Khan Academy #InfyXRoads

A1: (3/3) We are now piloting a middle school course that combines storytelling with computer science. #InfyXRoads

A2: One challenge: parents often don’t understand the importance and impact of maker education. In a maker ed classroom they see chaos and ask “where’s the learning?” I know. I was one of those parents! #InfyXRoads.

A3: As others have said before: the essence of maker ed isn’t the resources, its the mindset. The Maker Mindset can be instilled with the simplest of materials such as cardboard, tape, straws ... I’m sure @JessicaKParker and Steve Davee can elaborate. #InfyXRoads

A4: The Maker Movement isn’t nearly as diverse as it needs to be. We need to do more to reach underserved communities. #InfyXRoads

A5: (1/2) I’ve been amazed at the creativity and ingenuity displayed by Young Maker project teams in response to a simple question: “What do you want to exhibit Maker Fair?” #InfyXRoads

A5 (2/2) Elements I think that make it successful are: 1) there is a meaningful deadline, 2) it’s open ended enough to accommodate a wide variety of interests, and 3) it’s an exhibition rather than a competition. #InfyXRoads
