Cylinders need not conform to some rigid ideal invented by a dead white person named Plato. It's OK for a cylinder to be a little rounder in the waist if that feels good to it. Stop imposing your idea of proportionality constant on cylinders living their true free life.

Virtual credit cards are underrated. There are few problems that cannot be solved by adding a layer of indirection (that you control).

I grew up in a Communist apartment block where all the wiring was aluminium. Recently I installed a new chandelier for Mom. The fixture still had terminals rated for Al wire. The 45 year old wiring was still OK. We'll live.

It's a lesson in how ugly and messy subsidies inevitably get. We should emphatically not pay for climate policy out of anywhere. The wrong direction of money flow grows an ecosystem of leeches. Do climate policy thru pollution taxes and you'll incidentally fix the budget too.

LLMs talk. That's what they do. The only other thing that does that, and with which they are in competition, is people. If any business is using LLMs to cut costs, they are using v them to cut people. Silence sounds like the exact right corporate policy.

Ignore/filter out automatically generated emails. It should cost someone at least as much effort to produce the email as it takes you to read and process it. If it didn't, the value content of that message isn't worth dealing with it.

Extremely stressful office furniture malfunction: A desk top attachment fastener makes a soft ping under pressure that sounds like an *incoming Slack message*.

Grid folks, why is this not a matter of synchronizing to another grid in 1 hour, tops? Disconnect from Ruzzia, stabilize frequency a bit, close a big transmission switch when in phase, done?

The construction of Black Wednesday tariffs is purely woke. They demand not the equality of opportunity, but the equality of outcome.

Can somebody explain to me how a local frequency deviation of a few tenths of a Hz is ever tolerable? It sounds like you'd be 180° off phase in a few seconds and then your interconnections become loads. The phase angle varies constantly and all kinds of hellish dynamics start?

We will never comfortably call the models "intelligent", no matter what they do, because the implicit semantics of "intelligent" is "that which distinguishes us as specially human". Yes, the circle of uniquely human acts is shrinking, and we'll be left with untestable qualia.

Hey Sound Transit - 🚆 🚈 🚍, would you please actively tell us when the trains are not running? Also, KNKX Public Radio , I was listening to the morning traffic update, and didn't learn about the Line 2 outage. Hmm.
