First, because it is a myth that fossil fuels = development. Nnimmo lays out why below ⤵️ As the industry faces *unprecedented global headwinds* it is a truly horrible bet to think that this can change now.🎲

If plans go forward, two-thirds of projected oil and gas expansion in Africa 2020-2050 will be owned by overseas corporations, who are structuring contracts to guard remaining revenues. TotalEnergies, eni, ExxonMobil, & bp are projected to own the most new production 🤬

Meanwhile, yesterday the International Energy Agency reiterated that 1.5°C means no new approvals for fossil fuel extraction. Even in a worse-than-1.5°C scenario fossil fuels peak soon meaning new extraction *anywhere* is at risk of becoming stranded.

Our report finds fully 71% of projected new production in Africa is at *extra* risk of becoming stranded because it's in a new region or uses a costly mode of production. This means more overnight job losses, unfunded clean-up, and shortfalls in government revenue.😱

And 7️⃣ of the 16 countries in Africa with the most projected new oil & gas production are brand new entrants. The costs of building infrastructure & regulations from scratch while the industry is volatile means these plans are EXTRA risky.

These plans to build new oil, gas, and coal projects in Africa are also crowding out the local, equitable, and renewable energy future that could be built instead! 🌞🔧📣

But the weight of the evidence is that the escalating risks of fossil fuel extraction for economies, the climate, and frontline communities mean there is now little to gain and *everything to lose* from building new fossil fuel projects in Africa. Here's what to do instead:
