The Americans are proposing to send 250 people to Rwanda. This is 1/1000 of the people who have arrived in small boats to the UK since just April. The scheme did not, does not, and never could have 'a chance' at doing anything about our arrivals.

The other clear examples of states giving up nuclear weapons he could cite are all former "Soviet" colonies - and in particular Ukraine. But of course he does not mention this, both because this would not fit the vibe he is looking for, and because the history is uncomfortable.

Trump's people at DHS are referencing here "Which Way, Western Man," a book by white supremacist William Gayley Simpson that was published by an American Neo-Nazi organization, the National Alliance. In the book, Simpson argued that Hitler was right and Jews must be killed.

A most educational chart. Thank you. Labour inherited a declining trend in vacancies. Unable to halt that decline after a year, much less reverse it. Indeed, the decline could be speeding up. Not good.

New: The UK economy grew faster than forecast in the second quarter of the year 0.3% growth in Q2, above the 0.1% forecast Output in June alone gained 0.4% — double expectations It suggests the economy held up in a difficult period of tax rises and tariffs

G7: Q2 GDP released for 5 US 0.8% Japan (tomorrow - 0.4% forecast) = UK 0.3% =France 0.3% Canada - 0 or -0.1 forecast Italy -0.1 Germany -0.1 Actually on the basis of the whole first half of this year, so Q1 & Q2, the UK is likely to still be the fastest growing G7 economy

'Today's numbers showed the economy beat expectations' Chancellor Rachel Reeves reacted to the latest figures on the UK economy which showed GDP grew by 0.3% between April and June bbc.co.uk/news/live/c209…

Should have used this version of the script Mel ⬇️ "Labour is managing the economy so badly that GDP this quarter only grew by the more, or the same, than it did in 7/9 of the last quarters we were in charge..." Or did the team decide it was too awkward?

Tax data allays fears of non-dom exodus from UK via Financial Times ‘total numbers leaving the country are in line with — or even below — official forecasts.’ on.ft.com/3JzrTyc

Nonsense - as I spelt out there is far more to be done. But the fact is that the economy grew more in the first half of this year than the Office for Budget Responsibility forecast it would for the whole year. You don’t get to ignore that just because it doesn’t fit what you’ve recently been writing

"I do not accept decline as inevitable." So important that Rachel Reeves hammers on the hope. The right is completely gone in doomerism, determined to talk everything down to accelerate their return. We need hope, and hope springs from action. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Neither the words 'may be eligible' or the fact the scheme has been in place since at least 2011 made it into the piece. issuu.com/swansea/docs/s… Dunno why, not like we're trying to construct a narrative or anything.

We need big, big change (mainly us seeing that council housing revolution we've been promised!) but there's a lot that can be done by local authorities in the mean time to make sure we're not scarring a generation of children. See my full report here NEF neweconomics.org/2025/08/nowher…
