#OTD 1948, Witold Pilecki was sentenced to death by a communist military court after a show trial, torture, and under false charges incl. espionage. He was executed on 25 May 1948. The communist authorities tried to erase memory of the hero. In 1990, the verdict was overturned.

Under the command of General Władysław Anders, the 2nd Polish Corps’ first assault on Monte Cassino took place #OTD on 12 May. On 18 May 1944, after extremely bloody and fierce fighting, the Poles captured the ruins of the monastery.
