Lowering U.S. and NC Flags to Half-Staff in Honor of NC Rep. Kelly Alexander Jr.

I’m delighted to congratulate Bobby Drakeford for winning the special election on Tuesday night to finish out Kelly Alexander, Jr.’s final term as your District 107 representative. #CLT #NCpol #NCpolitics

It will truly be the end of an era, since I will take over a differently-shaped district due to the redrawn legislative maps that will go into effect next year.

In his acceptance speech, Bobby demonstrated exactly why Alfred & Helen Alexander & I asked him to take on this brief but delicate role. His roots in West #CLT go far back. His father not only was a Johnson C. Smith U professor but also owned businesses in the area 1957-2002.

His mother dedicated 30 years of her life to the Charlotte school system and its children. And he raised his own children in the community. He has especially worked to support his local precinct, Precinct 16, and the McCrorey YMCA,

where he has raised lots of funds through its annual golf tournament and ensured the smooth running of the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. prayer breakfast. Over the next three-and-a-half months, he will advocate for the issues that mattered most to Kelly:

environmental justice and clean energy jobs, affordable housing, supporting small businesses, and improving transportation infrastructure. I know that Bobby will be the perfect bridge in the transition from Kelly’s distinguished service to my filling his seat in the new year.

Together, we will endeavor to serve District 107 as it, too, transitions from its past and current shape to a new future in Kelly’s name and in honor of his powerful legacy.
