Henry Bartlett was a solicitor’s clerk from Lewes who took up photography as a hobby around the 1890s.
The collection (ACC 8509) shows life in Lewes over 100 years ago.

Many people chose to be photographed with their nearest and dearest- their pets.

This is Railway Jack, an adventurous terrier from Lewes who loved train hopping across the south-east railway. A much-loved local celebrity, he was introduced to the Princess of Wales when she visited Sussex in 1883.

In 1958 Toby the terrier celebrated his 20th birthday. He lived at the Station Hotel on Hampstead Road, Brighton. Hotel owners Mr and Mrs Morely are pictured toasting to his future health. 🍰 ⭐

Shades of Monty Python in a series of pictures taken around 1890 showing Mrs Charles Lamb and Mrs Musgrave dressed in armour. Some of these pictures are in our new display, along with other material purchased with support from our friends' association, FoTKA. (AMS 7173/2/2)
