4/9 Dalits who had access both to the internet and a mobile phone/laptop/computer, suddenly had access to a universe of opportunities. Now some Dalits owned a small space virtually, however small or however unreal it might be.

5/9 But then comes hate speech in the comment sections and as memes or messages circulate on WhatsApp. They might look as personal attacks but often they target the person as a part of the Dalit community and uses casteist slurs and abuses to insult the person. #CasteHateSpeech

7/9 Recommendation 2: The National Digital Literacy Mission, should specifically focus on caste-based #digitaldivide and speedy provision of access to ICT’s for the Dalit people especially Dalit women and LGBTQIA persons. The mission should also focus on providing media training.

8/9 Recommendation 3: A new law to make online #CasteHateSpeech a punishable offence must be made and be given the required jurisdictional authority.

9/9 Recommendation 4: Governments should hold social media platforms accountable for not withholding harmful content and collaborate with them to take down any content that might cause caste clashes or lead to caste discrimination.
