Yes Tim Walker I agree. It’s the politically appointed peers that we should pay attention to. Perhaps limit their term to five years? And only extend if the public judges they have been conspicuously useful.

Tim Walker True but no other democracy allows life long paid legislators by hereditary descent. The whole UK House of Lords (if a bicameral system is deemed essential, a debate nobody entertains) should be replaced by a majority elected Senate.

Johnson has left toxic legacies across public life, but perhaps most conspicuously in the Lords. Shakespeare was right when he said ‘the evil that men do lives after them.’

Any even half-way effective overhaul of the Lords should involve all existing members being asked what is the point of them, on what basis did they get in, and what, if anything, do they add to the sum of human knowledge?
