I started TextXD as a BIDS - Berkeley Institute for Data Science postdoc with @Nick_B_Adams. I'm thrilled to be visiting (virtually) again this year. Young scholars, sign up for the hack-with a purpose-a-thon! It's a fantastic way to get your hands in data and do some good. Deadline 12/5. textxd.org
Everyone, check out this amazing work by Chris Kennedy Claudia von Vacano to identify hate speech online: hatespeech.berkeley.edu. They use IRT and deep learning to output a *continuous* measure for each comment, not just a binary hate/not hate. Really great work 👏👏 Presented TextXD
"Sure, transformers are cool ...but have you tried rules?" Loved Rachael Tatman @[email protected]'s talk TextXD Transformers are flexible, probabilistic, good at unseen data, BUT unpredictable, require a lot of data. Rules are predictable, easy to interpret, unsupervised, BUT narrow, hard to adapt.
Next Session: Real World NLP w/ Ines Montani, Claudiu Branzan & [email protected] 🙌🏽 Starts at 1:00PM PST Webinar link: berkeley.zoom.us/webinar/regist… #NLP #DataScience #RStats
Writing about #DataScience is a challenge. Deborah Nolan and Sara Stoudt, PhD created a "framework for learning the art of #Statistical storytelling," created a course and even co-authored an upcoming book to support students with their writing. #CalResearch bit.ly/2IFbw4c

I will be presenting at TextXD on Dec. 6! Talking about my new work with Laszlo BarabasiLab Albert-László Barabási on "Hidden Citations" (case in point—when you use GR without citing Einstein:) What are their good/bad effects on science? See for details: textxd.org/speaker/meng/
