When it comes to practicing, I am reminded of what the Old Coach use to say.

“If you practice at half speed, you get really good at going half speed. And that’s not half good enough.”

'In order to kick it in gear during a game, you have to kick it in gear daily at practice.'

We have all heard of it. Shell Drill. A defensive drill used by most 'serious' defensive-minded coaches.

But why Shell Drill? From where did that term come?

Here is the explanation I got many years ago at the beginning of my coaching career.

The Old Coach use to say, “I might know a lot, but I don’t know it all. And I try to remember that.”

Old Coach also said, “It’s offensive when ya don’t play good defense. If ya want to play on offense, ya better play some defense.”

When it comes to teaching defense, I found the off season (spring/summer) and pre season (Sept/Oct) were super important times to introduce (or polish up) our man to man defensive fundamentals.

Here are my 6 favorite drills for accomplishing this:

The 31 point comeback in Mavs v Clips game was crazy!

Seeing Paul George playing for the Clips reminded me of my 2009 season at Sacramento State.

We opened at Fresno State & Paul George. Later, at Wash St & Clay Thompson.

In league twice at Weber St & Damian Lillard.

Using the Numbered Fast Break setup as a Press Offense alignment is a simple & effective method.

Rim Runner helps in dead ball situations to get the ball in. Otherwise, he is a Big target in the center of the court to relay passes or draw defenders.

Wings can help or run deep.

Fast Breaks need a point guard who can read the situation as it unfolds.

A rebounder looks for the deep outlet first.

But on a shorter outlet to the pt guard, it’s now a read:
1. Quick sideline pass
2. Look deep middle for rim runner
3. A dribble to the middle & a crossing pass
